Facebook…still the social media leader
Grandma and grandpa…and apparently several of their friends…are using Facebook more than ever before. That’s one of the more interesting findings released last week from the Pew Research Center’s Social Media Update 2013.
According to the telephone survey conducted between Aug. 7 and Sept. 16, 2013, of 1,801 U.S. adults, 45 percent of Internet users age 65 or older now use Facebook, up from 35 percent who did so in late 2012. So why the increase of Facebook use among this age group?
For starters, grandparents are finding Facebook an ideal way to stay connected with their children and grandchildren. Birthday parties, soccer games, holidays, lost tooth – you can’t scroll through five seconds of Facebook without running into photos of everyone’s kids doing these things. Plus the rise in popularity of smart phones is making Facebook access easier and convenient. All it takes is one or two taps of the screen and you’re in.
